SOLAR TRACKER CONTROL SYSTEMS

Control systems consist of electromechanical drives, control unit and software.

The solar radiation sensor, designed by “Ukrainian Systems Solar” LLC, is a miniature dual-axis tracker with a photoelectric element. It scans the sky under certain algorithm, finds the most energy effective position and transmits the coordinates for the tracker control system via the wireless communication channel. After that the tracker directs the solar panels in the definite direction.

Information about the tracker’s functional status is transmitted by the control system to the dedicated server automatically via the GPRS-channel.

Dynamic mounting systems (trackers) allow to use the solar energy to generate electricity in the most effective way compared to static systems.

PASSIVE CONTROL SYSTEMS set the solar PV panels to the position given by the program for the certain time and place. In this case, the analysis of the position of the Sun and solar radiation are not carried out.

ACTIVE CONTROL SYSTEMS analyze the position of the Sun in the sky and its illumination by the solar radiation sensor, and orient the set of PV panels to the brightest point of the sky.

COMBINED CONTROL SYSTEMS are used to improve the reliability of dual-axis trackers. In normal mode, the system operates in accordance with the algorithm of the active system. In cases of a failure of the solar radiation sensor, the control system switches into the principle of the passive control system.

We recommend to use the ACTIVE or COMBINED types of control systems for dual-axis trackers.

The passive system is also effective, because modern technologies allow us to calculate the position of the Sun in the sky accurately and orientate our PV solar panels accordantly. But the passive control system does not take into account the environment between the Sun and the solar panels – the Earth’s atmosphere. Our atmosphere contains some gases, dust particles, water in the form of steam, ice particles, drops etc. in its composition. All of these components can absorb, refract, dissipate and partially reflect the solar energy.

The passive control systems provide an increase in electricity generation, compared to static systems of the same power, at a level of 39% and above. The active and combined types of control systems – 49% and above.

WIND PROTECTION:

When the wind force increases beyond certain values, the control system sets the PV panels (PVP) to the position of fluctuation (the position of the least resistance to air flow).
When the wind speed reaches 9 m/s , the system starts to incline an array of solar panels horizontally, gradually, as the wind speed increases. At wind speed of 18 m/s , the array of solar panels takes a horizontal position.

This type of PV mounting systems has been most widely used in Ukraine. The number of PV modules on one base array is generally 10-76 pcs. The total length of the array is limited to the shape of the land plot, the selection of inverters and the general project design of the solar power plant. The installation angle, the number of supporting racks is determined by the geographical location and soil characteristics.

Roof constructions depend, above all, on structure and orientation of the rooftop cover. The fastening type can be either ballast (flat roof) or anchor (for sloping and flat roofs). As a rule, there are no complete standard solutions for rooftop systems; each system needs individual analysis and design. Configuration of the solar panel arrays – the number and orientation of solar PV panels, slope and type of fastening, etc., depend on the structure of the specific roof.

Ballast constructions “South” for flat roofs:
Tilt: 15°. The standard set is designed for 5 vertically oriented PV modules, contains 3 ballast plates 70 kg each. The weight of metal components for 5 PV modules is about 20 kg (the total weight of the kit is ~230 kg).

Ballast constructions “East-West” for flat roofs:
Tilt: 15°. The standard set is designed for 6 horizontally oriented PV modules, contains 4 ballast plates 70 kg each (8 plates for an outside row). The weight of metal components for 6 PV modules is about 34 kg (the total weight of the kit is ~314 kg, and for the set with 8 plates – ~594 kg).
 
The “East-West” system allows to place more PV panels per 1 sq.m of the roof. The rows are to be installed into ranks along “North-South” line and the PV panels are oriented to the East and West. The “East-West” ballast system is considered as more effective for the roofs more longer from North to South, than from East to West.

MATERIALS AND STANDARDS

Aluminum elements of dynamic PV mounting systems are manufactured of the high-quality extruded aluminum profile of AlMg0.7Si 6063T66 based on EN 755-2.
Steel elements are made of С235 steel under the National State Standard 27772-80 and covered with a protective hot dip galvanizing coating with a thickness of up to 70 μm. The coating meets the requirements of the National State Standard 9.307-89.
Fastening elements of mounting systems are supplied in options:

  • stainless steel А2, А4 ISO 3506-1:2009; ISO 3506-2:2009;
  • carbon steel with zinc-dispersed coating Delta-MKS® ISO 10683: 2000, in the strength classes 5.8, 8.8 ISO 898-1: 2010.

A selection of materials used in the mounting systems fully eliminates corrosion degradation, including by electrochemical corrosion for at least 25 years. A similar result has been achieved through a careful selection and reasonable combination of materials, as well as the use of protective new generation zinc- dispersed coatings Delta MKS®.
